Thanks to the generosity of funders eager to support public school teachers and students during the coronavirus school closures, we’re piloting the Keep Kids Learning program, which helps teachers customize kits for students to continue learning at home.
This opportunity is only available to a select group of teachers in this pilot stage. If you haven’t been invited to this program, please check our Help Center guidance about the Keep Kids Learning program for updates on this funding.
For ease of experience, we highly recommend reading through this “how to” content prior to using your Walmart Select gift cards.
Using your Walmart Select gift cards
What you need to begin
Make sure you have saved or printed both of the $500 Walmart Select gift cards you received. You have a total of $1000 to spend and will need to use the gift cards during checkout.
Shopping online for eligible items
Always start your shopping from our curated landing page of eligible Walmart materials.
After you find an item to add to your cart, we recommend that you always go back to the eligible items landing page to find more items.
Shopping at Walmart stores for eligible items
You can use these gift cards in Walmart stores to shop in person, just keep in mind the same eligibility rules apply in stores. Only items in the following categories can be paid for with the Walmart Select gift cards.
Eligible shopping categories:
- School Supplies
- Games, Puzzles, and Toys
- Personal Care
- Arts & Crafts
How to pay with the gift card
Online: During Step 4 of checkout, select "Gift Card" and follow the on screen directions to add your gift card. The images below show you what it should look like. Be sure to omit or remove any spaces from the gift card number when typing it in the box.
In store: Hand the printed gift card to the cashier or have it available to pull up on your mobile device.
Frequently Asked Questions
I'm getting an error that my pin and gift card don't match?
Check that you are entering all of the digits correctly and that all spaces have been deleted. When you copy and paste from your digital gift card it may copy spaces at the end of the number, be sure to delete all those spaces.
How do I search for a specific item on Walmart.com?
While we highly recommend using the curated landing page, we recognize that you might have something particular in mind and want to search for it. It's important to know that searching for items on Walmart.com may result in inconsistent item eligibility results.
If you do need to search, make sure the item is —
1. In one of the following categories:
- School Supplies
- Games, Puzzles, and Toys
- Personal Care
- Arts & Crafts
You can confirm the category along the top of any search or product details page. See example below.
2. Sold and shipped by Walmart.
You will see the below text/icon on the product details page.
When using Walmart.com on a desktop computer, you can refine search results to show only items sold and shipped by Walmart using the "Retailer" filter on the left side of search results. See example below. (Note: the experience may vary on mobile devices.)
Why is it asking me to pay for a portion of my cart?
If you're being asked to provide another payment method for a portion of your cart, it could mean one of two things —
- You have at least one ineligible item in your cart. You might be able to spot it based on price you're being asked to cover. Check to see if anything in your cart is roughly the price of what you're being asked to pay, remove that item(s) from your cart and try again.
- Your total with taxes and shipping is more than the amount remaining on your gift card. You can check the balance remaining any time.
Can I use both of my gift cards at once for a higher cost item?
Yes. If you have a balance remaining after applying one gift card, you will see an option to add another gift card as a payment method.
How can I tell which items are ineligible?
You might be able to spot it based on the price you're being asked to cover. Check to see if anything in your cart is roughly the price of what you're being asked to pay, remove that item(s) from your cart and try again.
Can I shop in stores?
Yes. It might be a bit harder to tell which items are eligible, but Walmart Select gift cards are accepted in all Walmart retail locations. Be sure to print out the gift card or have it available to access on your mobile device before heading into a store. Note: you cannot use these gift cards at Sam's Club.
What if I have problems using the gift card in the store?
Walmart cashiers can assist you with finalizing transactions. If you run into significant issues trying to use the card in store, please reach out to our support team. We will not be able to assist in real time, though, so you may need to cancel your in store transaction.
Can I shop on the Walmart Grocery website?
No. You can only shop on Walmart.com.
Do I need a Walmart.com account to use the gift cards?
No, but if you want quick access to past orders it might be worth creating an account.
Can I ship to multiple addresses?
Not in a single order. If you need to ship to multiple addresses, you'll have create separate orders for each address. If you have an account, though, you can quickly reorder the same materials by clicking on the Account icon on the upper right and clicking the Reorder Items option. See below.
Can I pick up items in store?
Yes. If that is the most convenient option for you, you can choose to pick up items at your local store during checkout. You can also provide alternate pick up names if someone other than yourself needs to pick up the items in store.
How can I check the balance remaining on my gift cards?
Recipients can check their balance online or by calling 888-537-5503
If I'm also shopping for personal items, will I need to make these gift card purchases in a separate transaction?
No. You can redeem a gift card in the same transaction as other non-approved items. You'll just have to pay for non-qualifying items using another form of payment.
Why can’t I request laptops or tablets for my students?
We know that remote learning is challenging for many students who might not have access to technology like laptops or tablets at home. Because most school districts have policies in place to manage and support devices like these — and many are embarking on their own ambitious programs to support students with these items — we’ve omitted those items from this funding opportunity to avoid potential challenges for you and your students.
We hope the items available can still help you support your students.
Why does it say that it won't ship for a long time?
Many vendors are experiencing supply and shipping delays right now. The shipping speed from Walmart will be clearly stated through the checkout process. If you have concerns about shipping speed or want more information on that, you will need to contact Walmart support for more details.
Why can't I get as many of an item as I need?
Quantity limits are set by vendors. If you're not able to get as many of an item as you'd like, it's likely related to current inventory and availability. DonorsChoose cannot change any item quantity limitations.
What happens if I spend more than my total gift card amount?
If the total cost (with tax and any shipping) of eligible items is over your total remaining gift card amount, you will be asked to enter a payment method to pay for any remaining amount.
Do I have to use it all at once?
No. As long as funds remain on your gift card and it hasn't expired, you can use it to purchase eligible items.
Can I switch to a different funding type?
Each round of funding for the Keep Kids Learning Program is backed by either Walmart Select gift cards or Amazon.com Education Assistance Produce Vouchers. You cannot exchange one for the other.
