The Round Up for Schools app is a way that merchants using a supported Clover device can support schools in their community through DonorsChoose.
How it works:
- When you download and activate the Round Up for Schools app, your customers will be invited to round up their purchase to donate to a local school that you’ve selected during setup.
- Every night, donations collected throughout the day are applied to active DonorsChoose classroom requests at the school you selected.
If the school you selected doesn’t have active classroom requests at any point, we’ll route your donation to a nearby school that does have active requests. When the school you chose posts a new request, subsequent donations will go to that school.
If you’re looking for a total of the amount donated through the Round Up for Schools app, you’ll find that at the end of every month on your Clover statement. You can also look at your payment reports in the Clover portal (go to Reporting -> Payments) and look for “Non-revenue Items,” which includes donations made via the Round Up for Schools app.
What is DonorsChoose?
We’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that enables individuals to donate directly to public school classrooms. 81% of public schools in the US have posted a request on our platform! We’ve received Charity Navigator’s highest rating every year since 2005.
Can I use the app on all Clover devices?
The app is compatible with the Clover Mini and Station devices using the Register app. We are not compatible with the Flex and Go devices, or the Sale app.
How are donations reported to DonorsChoose?
Every time a customer donates, we record the donation amount. Each night, that day’s donations are applied to an active classroom request at the school of your choice on DonorsChoose.
Funding is sent to DonorsChoose on a monthly basis, as your app fee. The amount represents the total of all rounded-up donations you’ve collected that month. There is no additional fee to use the app.
How can I see a summary of my business’s classroom donations?
You will see the donations at the end of each month on your Clover statement. Additionally, you can look at your payment reports in the Clover portal (go to Reporting -> Payments) and look for “Non-revenue Items,” which includes donations made via the Round Up for Schools app.
Donations made through the app are generally not subject to sales tax or income tax, because the customer-designated amount is sent in full to the charity and no portion is retained by the merchant. Donations collected in this way should generally be excluded from both revenue and expense as well.
What happens if you support a school without active requests?
The school you’ve chosen to receive your donations may not always have active requests on DonorsChoose. When that happens, we will route your donation to the school closest to your business. When the school you chose posts a new request, subsequent donations will go to that school.
How are donations doubled?
For months to come, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is doubling all donations made at your business. You don’t need to do anything to activate the match - it will happen automatically when the donation is applied!
How can I review all the classrooms and requests that my business has helped?
You can log into DonorsChoose using the email associated with your Clover merchant account. (You’ll need to create a new password, your Clover merchant login will not work.) Once you’re logged-in, you can view your Giving History.
What is the Merchant Policy for the app?
Because we encourage teachers to promote the merchant supporting their school, we are not able to accept merchants whose primary products cannot be sold to children or promoted in a public school, including:
- Tobacco, vaping, or marijuana merchants
- Establishments that exclusively sell alcoholic beverages
- Gun and ammunition shops
- Adult entertainment
- Tattoo parlors
- Gambling establishments
- Political or religious entities
