Applied Digital Skills instructions

  1. Create your Applied Digital Skills Instructor account.
    1. You’ll need a Gmail/Google account to get started. (Don't have one? They're free and easy to create!)
  2. Click on the Curriculum tab at the top of any screen to peruse the available curriculum and choose your favorite. The Google team particularly recommends the following:
    • Research and Develop a Topic
    • Create a Resume in Google Docs
    • Plan an Event
      • To qualify for the rewards, you will teach your students a lesson unit from the curriculum you choose. For example, you could teach “Lesson 4: Create a Logo” in the Plan an Event curriculum, and go through each of the mini-lesson links within that lesson unit. You do not need to teach the entire curriculum.
  3. Follow the prompts to create a class, and enroll your learners with your unique class code:APSKI_Create_a_Class.png
  4. Teach the lesson unit you chose in Step 2 to 20+ of your students!
  5. Once your students have completed the lesson unit, take a screenshot of your Applied Digital Skills teacher dashboard showing 20+ student stars, so be sure to have that image handy. Please ensure that student usernames, names & passwords are not visible in the screenshot. Here’s what your dashboard should look like:
    • 20of20.jpg
  6. Once you’ve completed the lesson unit, fill out this completion survey. You’ll be asked to share the screenshot or pdf of the teacher dashboard mentioned in Step 5.
  7. Once you’ve submitted the completion survey, the DonorsChoose.org team will email you a $300 gift code within 2 weeks, while funds last!

CS First instructions

Neither you nor your students need any prior computer science knowledge to participate. In fact, these rewards are specially meant for teachers and students who have not before tried any CS First activities.  Teachers can start by exploring Google’s free teacher resources.

  1. Create a CS First teacher accountCS_First_Create_a_Teacher_Account.png
    • You’ll need a free Gmail/Google account to get started. (Don't have one? They're free and easy to create!)
    • You’ll be asked for your school address and a few other details.
  2. Click on the Curriculum tab at the top of any screen to peruse the available curriculum and choose your favorite. The Google team particularly recommends the following:
    • An Unusual Discovery
    • Animate a Name
    • (The two activities listed above are also available in Spanish!)
  3. Create a CS First Club for your class, and invite your students to join the club and create their own student accounts here.
  4. When you’re ready to teach the activity you chose in Step 3, send your students to the homepage of the activity you’ve selected. For example, here is the homepage for the English version of Animate a Name, and here is the homepage for the Spanish version of Animate a Name.
  5. Help at least twenty students follow the instructions for the activity, which will be listed on the right side of your screen. When you have completed the instructions, take a screenshot of your CS First teacher dashboard showing 20+ student stars. You will need this to receive the DonorsChoose.org gift code, so be sure to keep that image handy.
    • If you see check marks instead of stars, it means that your students need to watch all the videos in the activity to completion.
    • Please ensure that student usernames, names & passwords are not visible in the screenshot. Here’s what your dashboard should look like:
    • CS_First_Dashboard.png
    • To save and share the projects your students create, your students will need to be logged in to Scratch. They can use the same login and password they used to join your club in Step 4. This is not required for activity completion.
  6. When all your students are done, fill out this 15-minute completion survey. As part of the survey, you’ll be asked to upload the screenshot you took of your teacher dashboard.
  7. Once you’ve filled out the survey, the DonorsChoose.org team will email you a $300 gift code within 2 weeks, while funds last!
